Rotary Encoder Reversal Glitches

Most mice use a mechanical 2-phase rotary encoder. When dust or oxidized lubricant coats the internal metal pins, the quadrature signal skips, causing your screen to jitter or jump in the reverse direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mechanical microswitches use physical copper leaf springs. Over millions of actuations, metal tension weakens and contact surfaces oxidize. When pressed, the contacts bounce for longer than normal (chatter), causing the microcontroller to register two or more clicks within a few milliseconds.

1. Increase the firmware debounce time in your mouse software (e.g. Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse) from 4ms to 8–12ms. 2. Spray a tiny amount of quick-drying electronic contact cleaner (like WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner or DeoxIT) directly into the microswitch actuator and click it 50 times. 3. For a permanent fix, solder in high-durability switches (TTC Gold Dustproof, Huano Blue Shell Pink Dot) or upgrade to optical switch mice which are physically immune to debounce wear.

Dust, lint, or dried grease accumulates inside the mechanical rotary encoder wheel. When the wiper arms skip an electrical phase, the controller misinterprets the rotation direction, causing erratic jumping.

Most gaming mice use an internal debounce filter of 4ms to 12ms. If consecutive clicks on the same button register in under 40–80ms during normal human clicking, it is almost certainly a hardware switch chatter defect.
